Goodbye to Happy-ness

I love hearing our national anthem. I love singing our national anthem. It has come under pretty intense attacks in the last few years, but as long as I'm around, I think it is a song worth singing. It is a song worthy of honoring our nation - its citizens, those who serve in defending our nation with their lives, and yes even the freedoms some would attempt to wreck with their protests.

Here are three of my favorite versions. I'll never forget the night that Whitney Houston showed up at the Super Bowl to sing the national anthem dressed like she just finished a short run around her neighborhood - and proceeded to knock everyone on their butts with her rendition.

The second is the version Sandi Patty recorded that seems to rise to the heavens with great beauty and strength - fitting of the inspiration that comes from seeing "Old Glory" unfurled and waving free in the winds that animate it.

The third is an a capella version by the group called Voctave which I love to hear sing. I swear they could sing a menu and you'd think the angels were telling you about your dinner. So beautiful...

Here they are, in honor of the 4th of July holiday.
