My sister and I reminisced the other day about the summer storms we used to have.
They would boil up in the west of our house with dark clouds and the thunder could be heard from miles away. We knew how bad one was going to be just by observing how dark the clouds were coming. We haven't seen storms like that in many years...
When I attended Dallas Seminary, I remember one memorable storm that came upon the city with scary force. Again dark clouds told me it was going to be bad, and from my third floor room in Steiner dorm, I could watch the storm coming -- and it was pretty scary. When the rain started coming down, it was so hard that it blanked out the Dallas skyline making it seem like the city had vanished.
Storm chaser Mike Olbinski has produced a compilation of some of fascinating and beautiful storm footage in this haunting video. It reminds me of the verses in 1 Kings 19 and the story of Elijah meeting the Lord on the mountain - and how He was not in the wind, earthquake or fire, but in a still, small voice (1 Kings 19:9-18) which encouraged the prophet that he was not alone.
